Cosy Nook with Marianne Schuppe

For the 5th Cosy Nook we welcomed Marianne Schuppe, a singer, writer and composer based in Basel and working across music and language

Performed by Marianne Schuppe (voice, lute), Antoine Beuger (flute)
Programme

Notes for the hill (2015) accompanied by Antoine Beuger (flute).
A cycle of 12 short songs. The words are fragments of a journal written in the Vosges hills.

New work (2019) a longer form of song that Marianne is currently working on with Lute, uber-bow and voice.

We finished with a new work she read to us, a text score that invites the audience to imagine and recall certain sounds.

Marianne Schuppe

Her prime interest lies in the voice’s ability to move between pure sound and words. As a soloist she recorded the vocal-cycles of Giacinto Scelsi (New Albion 2006), Three Voices by Morton Feldman (col legno 2007) and her own work slow songs, Nosong (2015, 2018, edition wandelweiser).

These last 10 years she has gone back and at the same time forward into the field of song, trying ways to sing her own words, finding them while singing or writing them down then putting them to music.

Cosy Nook

(since 2016) a small cove in South London, where we occasionally come together to play, listen to and share words, sounds and other gems, polished or unpolished. (Named after a small rocky bay littered with gem stones smoothed by the fierce tidal waters of New Zealand South Island).
